THE CHIP: paintings by Hannah Perry Saucier

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce its next exhibition, “The Chip”, featuring paintings by Hannah Perry Saucier. The Gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance.

How does the space of the mind change as we accumulate new experiences? As human beings, we are always collecting information and shifting our minds to fit the new while retaining the old. How we recall our memories often distorts over time. Artist Hannah Perry Saucier’s work presented in “The Chip” visually represent the organization of inner worlds and explores how the mind adjusts itself as we adapt and change.

About Hannah Perry Saucier: She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has studied in Istanbul, Turkey (Hisar Egitim Vakfi, 2008-2009), Pretoria, South Africa (The University of Pretoria, 2012), Saugatuck, Michigan (Ox-bow School of Art, 2013), and furthered her work in Bangkok, Thailand.

The exhibition will run July 28 - September 17.

The Fantastic Nest

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce the next exhibition of its 2017 lineup, “The Fantastic Nest,” which features works by Australian artist, Kate McCarthy.  The Gallery will host an opening reception Friday, June 2 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.  The artist will be in attendance.

Human comfort, nesting, and personal expression rely heavily on the use of fabric, design, and their intrinsic tactile qualities.  With embroidery at the cornerstone of “The Fantastic Nest,” McCarthy uses stitching as a narrative tool throughout her body of work.  Chairs hint at rest, conversation, and repose.  The pillowy, fantastical figures are a wonder begging to be squished, touched, and adored.  The visceral reactions to her works are representational of all things that are fantastically human.

The exhibition will run June 2 through July 23.

Paintings by Jeffrey Cortland Jones + Sara Pittman

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce the next exhibition of its 2017 lineup, “Paintings by Jeffrey Cortland Jones + Sara Pittman.” The Gallery will host an opening reception Friday, April 14 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Both artists will be in attendance.

Although discernibly different in appearances, artists Jeffrey Cortland Jones and Sara Pittman tackle similar themes in their individual explorations of life through art. Both artists have an introverted and intuitive approach to making; acting on raw, observed feeling. The juxtaposition of detail in Pittman’s pieces and the subtle minimalism in Jones’s work creates a harmonious exchange about what happens at the moment that conscious contemplation breaks down.

The exhibition will run April 14 - May 28, 2017.

I Saw You At My Funeral

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, “I Saw You At My Funeral,” featuring new works by artist Mike Egan. The gallery will host an opening reception Saturday, September 10 from 6 - 9 pm, at which the artist will be in attendance.

As a child drawing cartoons and skateboard graphics, Mike Egan expressed an ever-present interest in skeletons and devils. Later in life, his fascination with mortality led to a career working in funeral homes, where he was constantly surrounded by death and mourning. This immersion into the most intimate and painful moments of life had a lasting influence on Egan’s acrylic paintings on panel. He started painting not only the stories of those who have passed, but the stories of those left behind after one's passing; the mourners, the lovers, the hurt and the relieved. His works are visual anecdotes; capturing sepulchral moments in time, presented to the viewer with whimsy and wit.

The new paintings Egan created for “I Saw You at My Funeral” are a look at his continued obsession with the idea of life and death. In light of recent world events and the way they are portrayed by the media, the subject matter is more important to him now than ever before. “There are so many tragic shootings and acts of violence in the world and it is constantly spoon fed to us through the media. These paintings act as a reminder to me that there are so many people to say ‘goodbye’ to, and that we must not forget them.”

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 10th, 2016 - 6 pm - 9 pm

The exhibition will run September 10 - November 4, 2016.

A Gallery Brunch, by Heart of a Thousand Hills

Join Heart Of a Thousand Hills for our inaugural Gallery Brunch where we will celebrate Chicago's everyday heroes. We aim to inspire and we want to honor those who inspire us.  The little things often go without notice--showing kindness to a stranger, helping out a friend, or giving a free hug. This is our way to say thank you.

On August 28th the Matthew Rachman Gallery will be full of hors d'oeuvres, mimosas, and summer vibes.  While you eat and drink also enjoy a silent auction, live music, and art.

HOTH is a 501c3 nonprofit working to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children in Rwanda and Chicago. All proceeds from this event and a percentage of gallery sales will go toward our Building Hope Project.  Fall 2016 we will break ground to build a school for children in Rwanda.  With no roof, walls, chalkboard or school supplies, students sit outside and circle around each other in the only classroom they have. Through this initiative, we not only hope to provide an improved educational environment but also plant the seed for hope and healing by introducing art programming to empower the children of Rwanda.

Join us, come ready to be inspired and come ready to have fun!

Intuition

Please join host committee Tracy Hickman, Kim Kutnick, Jill Maremont, Colin Falco and Matthew Rachman Gallery to celebrate artist Greg Dickerson’s opening of “Intuition”, an exhibit of 28 new works on Friday, July 15th. Meet the artist and hear first hand about the process, inspiration and evolution of “Intuition”. Portion of proceeds will be donated to Chicago House supporting programming for those disenfranchised by HIV.

Greg Dickerson’s new body of work includes 28 pieces ranging in size and color intensity. The new work exudes a certain child-like energy where institutional colors are paired with vibrant hues, graphic mark making and fabrics creating a juxtaposition between materials, color and form. The work is driven by intuitiveness. Greg’s work is created with mixed medium, using fabrics he’s inherited from his grandmother. For Greg, using fabric is about breaking borders where the fabric acts like a bucket of paint that is poured. While Greg creates his larger-scaled work he isolates color and texture in smaller studies. He creates a body of over 200 studies for any given show. The studies tell a story. One is a word, two a sentence, three a paragraph and so on until the story unfolds.

About Greg Dickerson Fine artist, Greg Dickerson received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Two decades of work has led Greg to focus on using tactile materials combined with paint on both canvas and wood panels. His vision is realized by working with the idea that immediacy allows for the conceptual process between elements and materials to interact. His work is best known for its’ playful abstraction and his exploration of color and form. For more information please visit www.gregdickersonstudio.com.

Jungle Boogie

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, “Jungle Boogie,” featuring abstract works by Chicago artists Ben Tinsley and Walter Fydryck. The gallery will host an opening reception Saturday, May 21 from 6 - 9 pm, at which both artists will be in attendance.

“Jungle Boogie” is a carefully curated collection of artwork that is saturated with a rhythm, funk, and soul that embraces color and celebrates life. It's a visual interpretation of those moments when the sun is about to rise  -  the clarity just before and after something truly epic crystallized eternally. The calm before, and after the storm. These works are meant to lead the viewer on a cultivated, ocular journey to places they’ve never been - and to experience the excitement and inception of the unknown.

Though decades apart in creation, themes of color, light and playfulness are seen throughout both artists’ works - all deeply rooted in the concept of form and movement. The notion of controlled chaos is one that Fydryck began experimenting with in the late 60’s (when these works were created), and a idea that is still being discovered in Tinsley’s contemporary artwork today.

The exhibition will run May 21 - July 10, 2016.

Shaping Memory

ARTISTS | CHRISTOPHE GAUSPARRO + RAUL DE LA TORRE

Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to announce the final exhibition in their 2015 lineup, “Shaping Memory,” featuring new work from Chicago artist Christophe Gausparro and L.A.based artist Raul de la Torre. The gallery will host an opening reception Friday, November 13 from 6 - 9 pm, at which both artists will be in attendance.

"Shaping Memory" is an exhibition of works created by manipulating materials, fusing new with found elements, repurposed in a context that breathes new existence and demeanor into a variety of mediums.

Christophe works with a focus on site specific, architectural art installations that often integrate a range of media. Interjecting a sense of narrative into his creations, his recent work explores the ideas of biomimicry (abstracting natural systems) utilizing found or salvaged materials.

Raul begins by working with paint, making cuts on canvas, and then fills those gaps by embroidering with cotton thread; adding texture in an attempt to find life and movement, by creating a more dynamic surface. The combinations of colors represent emotions and interpretations for each individual interacting with the works, and the embroidery is meant to represent those experiences as a part of our DNA.

The exhibition will run November 13 - December 23.

ARTISTS | LUFTWERK + KATE JOYCE

In October 2014, Luftwerk transformed Mies van der Rohe’s historic Farnsworth House into a revelatory canvas of light and sound through their installation titled “INsite”, resulting in a reanimation of our understanding and appreciation of an iconic architectural space. The four-night installation acted as an exploration into Mies van der Rohe’s architectural philosophy through a dynamic display of light, video-mapped in such a way as to engage the structure of the house, the fluidity of its transparent glass walls, and the organic - where natural form meets man’s geometry.

This fall, Matthew Rachman Gallery will present “INsite ONview” featuring artwork by Luftwerk and photography of the 2014 installation of “INsite” by Kate Joyce. INsite ONview is an exhibition of limited edition photographs and dynamic, kinetic ephemera based on the installation, its documentation, and further musings on the storied house.

The gallery will host an opening reception Friday, September 11 from 6 - 9 pm, at which all artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will run September 11 - November 8, 2015.

ADL Outreach Network Presents: Life After Hate, Featuring Christian Picciolini

Christian Picciolini was born and raised on the South side of Chicago, in a town called Blue Island, the birthplace of the American white power skinhead movement in the mid 1980s. At 14 years old, Picciolini became entrenched in the first neo-Nazi skinhead gang in the United States and began mingling with members almost twice his age. From tattoos to weapons, brawls to drunken rallies to political aspirations,Picciolini immersed himself in the racist skinhead culture and quickly became one of the movement’s most respected leaders. In April 2015, Picciolini will publish his memoir Romantic Violence: Memoirs Of An American Skinhead, in order to illustrate how shockingly easily a well-adapted, abundantly loved kid from a good family became a pioneer and leader in the early American racist skinhead movement. He was the lead singer in the first white power band from the United States to ever leave the country and play in Europe. He attended and spoke at KKK rallies, was kicked out of five different high schools, and stockpiled weapons so, if necessary, he’d be ready to fight the United States government to protect the white race from annihilation. By the time his skinhead involvement destroyed his first marriage, he had already realized the hollowness and rancor of the movement. In 2010, he co-founded and became Executive Board Chairman of Life After Hate, a non-profit outreach organization dedicated to peace, diversity and basic human goodness.

***Please note that all attendees will recieve a free digital copy of Christian's new book "Romantic Violence: Memoirs of an American Skinhead."
