Drawing inspiration from the natural and developed landscapes of Los Angeles, Maura Segal paints abstractions that interpret these scenes. The layers of Segal’s paintings are most telling, featuring a bed of organically shaped pieces of paper, painted over with fields of color. On some of her works, layers of paint or thinly cut paper are attached that mimic the flight of a bee as much as a network of highways and roads. Segal uses these processes to confuse the notions of organic and synthetic in her pieces.

Segal received her BFA in Graphic Design from California State University. In 2015, she was commissioned to make a piece for the Martin Luther King Jr Community Hospital in Los Angeles. Maura Segal’s work has been shown in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Singapore.
